πŸ“š Understanding Surf Conditions

🌬️ Wind Direction

Offshore wind (blowing from land to sea) is ideal β€” it holds up the wave face and creates clean, groomed waves. Onshore wind (sea to land) makes waves choppy and messy. Each beach has a different "offshore" direction depending on which way it faces.

🌊 Swell Height & Period

Swell height is how big the waves are in open water. Swell period is the time between waves β€” longer periods (10+ seconds) mean more powerful, well-organized waves from distant storms. Short periods (under 8 seconds) are locally generated wind swell, which tends to be messier.

🧭 Swell Direction

Waves travel across the ocean from where storms generate them. The direction the swell comes from determines which beaches it reaches. Southwest swells are most common on this coast. Some beaches are sheltered by headlands and only pick up certain swell directions.

πŸ–οΈ Beach Type

Beach breaks (sandy bottom) shift and change β€” good for beginners. Reef breaks (rock bottom) are more consistent but can be sharper. Sheltered coves like Point Roadknight filter out big swell, making them safer for families.
